Study aims

The aim of the study program Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics is to educate practically oriented graduates, but also future students of follow-up master's courses at universities focused on the fields of biomedical engineering, medical informatics, bioinformatics and mathematical biology. The graduate will be equipped with theoretical knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of man, which are needed to understand the basic biological processes in the human body, general and professional language skills, as well as skills for communication with doctors and other medical staff. staff. The graduate will master the principles of activity and the principles of using the means of medical technology and biomedical informatics, will be able to programmatically communicate with these means; will have an overview of current information in the field of legislation, which will be able to apply appropriately in practice. Emphasis is also placed on general and professional language training.

Graduate profile

The graduate of the study program Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics is a practically oriented bachelor with a technical and scientific overview in the field of biomedical engineering, health informatics and bioinformation technologies. He has the ability to work in a professional team, is very well-versed in general and professional areas, and has the prerequisites for further education and development in accordance with the development of knowledge in the field of biomedical engineering and bioinformatics. He is able to cooperate in the field of team experimental research and development, in development teams of research and educational institutions, in development and production companies in the field of medical technology and informatics, companies engaged in sales and service of medical equipment or software development, in biological and genetic laboratories .
The graduate has a good knowledge of mathematics, physics, biochemistry, biology, human physiology and medical ethics. He is acquainted with current trends in the field of medical technology and informatics. He will be able to apply national and international norms and standards in the field of medical technology. The knowledge and skills of the graduate are focused primarily on preparation for application in practice, ie in the medical workplace and in manufacturing, service or trading companies. However, the general basis of the study also enables further study in a follow-up master's field within BUT or at another university.
The graduate is entitled to perform the non-medical medical profession "Biomedical Technician" according to Act No. 96/2004 Coll. and is able to perform the profession according to the National System of Occupations. Maintains technical medical documentation, works with the information system of medical facilities, provides patients with information in accordance with their professional competence, participates in practical teaching in study fields to gain competence to perform the medical profession carried out by secondary schools, colleges and universities, participates on the preparation of standards.

Furthermore, a biomedical technician works with medical devices without professional supervision and without indication, if he cannot directly influence the health condition of patients with his activities. In particular, it may inspect and repair medical devices, organize and coordinate technical services related to the operation of medical equipment, and if it meets the qualification requirements, repairs medical devices, provides technical instruction to workers in operating medical devices and occupational safety, receives, inspects and stores medical devices .
A biomedical technician under the professional supervision of a clinical engineer or a clinical technician, on the basis of a doctor's indication and in accordance with a diagnosis made by a doctor, may work with medical devices if his activities can directly affect patients' health. Under the direct guidance of a clinical engineer or clinical technician with specialized competence in the field, he can perform activities in the selection of medical devices, especially evaluating their properties in relation to health care, designing sets of medical technologies, operating out-of-body medical devices, evaluation and clinical trials of medical devices.

Profession characteristics

Graduates of the bachelor's program are able to work independently in medical facilities with medical equipment, assist in diagnosis and therapy using special clinical equipment, control equipment, provide activities related to the operation of medical equipment and hospital information system, routinely analyze bioinformatics data, including genetic, operate software to support diagnostics, participate in the acquisition of medical devices and training of workers in the field of medical equipment and occupational safety.
The university qualification that the graduates of the BPC-BTB study program will obtain through their studies will enable them to continue in follow-up master's programs in related fields at BUT, CTU in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, and others.

Study plan creation

Courses are evaluated according to ECTS credits. The credit expresses an approximate weekly student's workload for the course. Credits for a given course are obtained after the prescribed completion, i.e. after awarding a credit, classified credit, or by passing an exam under the conditions of the BUT Rules of Study and Examination, the internal standard of the Rules for Organization of Studies at FEEC and the composition and content individually defined in each course.
In a three-year bachelor study, the student must earn at least 180 credits in the specified credit composition:
169 credits in compulsory courses,
7 credits for elaboration, submission and successful defense of bachelor thesis,
4 credits in compulsory elective (PV) courses,
at least 5 credits in elective courses.

Obligatory courses are usually completed by the student in semesters and years as stated in the curriculum. If a student fails to complete a compulsory course in the prescribed manner, he / she must register it again in the following year of his / her studies.
During the study, students must complete two English courses (English for Bachelors, English for Electrical Engineering).
Elective courses extend the general knowledge of students. Courses are chosen by the student himself or herself from a full-faculty offer (FEEC departments) or from the other faculties of VUT (so-called free courses) and can pass them in any year or semester of bachelor study. Elective courses include Physical Education. If a student has not successfully completed an elective course, he / she may or may not write another academic year in the next academic year.
Students must obtain the corresponding electrotechnic qualification at the beginning of their study.

Availability for the disabled

All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The graduates may continue in a master's study programme.
