Study aims
The two-year follow-up master's degree program Electrical Power Engineering is focused on the education of engineers with a broad base of knowledge of theory and practical applications in the field of energy, electrical engineering and related economics. The aim of the MPC-EEN study program is to offer such a university study, which is focused on the whole field of electricity and which will provide students with basic engineering knowledge and skills related to production, transmission, distribution and use of electricity in the current needs and future development of electricity. Thanks to high-quality theoretical education and a broad universal basis of application-oriented field study, the high adaptability of the graduate to all specific requirements of his future professional practice is ensured.
Graduate profile
The study program Electric Power Engineering enables the graduate to acquire qualified knowledge in the field of production, transmission, distribution and use of electricity and economics within the current needs and future development of electric power engineering. The spectrum of knowledge ranges from theoretical knowledge to practical applications. The graduate is qualified in the field of power engineering and electrical engineering. The graduate is able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in research, development, design and operation of demanding equipment in power engineering, power engineering and heavy current electrical engineering. In all these areas, he is also able to hold higher technical-managerial and managerial positions. The graduate can also continue his / her studies in doctoral study programs.
The graduate will acquire basic engineering knowledge and skills, which he / she will professionally profile, especially in areas related to:
- with the basic problems of electricity transmission,
- the operation of distribution and industrial networks, the nature of the failure conditions of these networks, the way in which they are protected and the standards currently used to assess the reliability of electricity supply, - with the current state and operation of power station equipment, especially at the level of HV and VHV and with the theoretical foundations of dimensioning of distribution equipment and conductors, - with basic mathematical models for the control of interconnected electricity systems, with power flow calculations and voltage regulation, with frequency control and with dispatch control, - with transients in the electricity system, - with the production of electricity in power plants and heating plants, with the operating conditions of synchronous alternators and methods of their protection, with the dimensioning and control of sources for the power plant's own consumption,
- with the theory of basic and special types of electrothermal heating and their technical applications,
- with the basics of lighting technology and basic information on lighting components, with the principles of light measurement, with the evaluation of lighting and with light sources,
- with basic and direct connections and dependencies between problems and topics of a purely technical nature in the field of electricity and between economic aspects of the problem,
- with selected parts of mathematics and physics,
- with the issue of power quality and EMC, diagnostics in the power industry, high voltage technology, the operation of renewable sources and nuclear power plants and more.
Profession characteristics
Thanks to a quality theoretical education and a broad universal basis of application-oriented study of the follow-up master's program in Electrical Power Engineering (MPC-EEN), a high adaptability of the graduate to all specific requirements of his future professional practice is ensured. Graduates will find employment as operational specialists, especially in industry, but also in commercial and other companies, not only focused on electrical engineering and energy. Within all the above technical areas, they are also able to perform higher technical-managerial and managerial functions. The focus of the study program Electrical Power Engineering also enables the direct deployment of graduates in production, operational or service technical practice, as well as in research, development, design and operation of demanding equipment in power engineering, heavy current electrical engineering and industry, or can continue their studies in doctoral studies. program.
Graduates can apply, for example, in the following specific professional positions:
- operational, design and management worker in power plants, heating plants, entities operating electrical networks and production companies focused mainly on machinery and equipment for the electricity industry,
- developer in the field of power engineering and heavy current electrical engineering,
- test technician,
- energy specialist,
- and more.
Study plan creation
Courses are evaluated according to ECTS credits. The credit expresses an approximate weekly student's workload for the course. Credits for a given course are obtained after the prescribed completion, i.e. after awarding a credit, classified credit, or by passing an exam under the conditions of the BUT Rules of Study and Examination, the internal standard of the Rules for Organization of Studies at FEEC and the composition and content individually defined in each course.
In a two-year master study, the student must earn at least 120 credits in the specified credit composition:
73 credits in compulsory courses,
42 credits in compulsory elective (PV) courses,
5 credits in elective courses,
Obligatory courses are usually completed by the student in semesters and years as stated in the curriculum. If a student fails to complete a compulsory course in the prescribed manner, he / she must register it again in the following year of his / her studies.
Compulsory elective courses of profiling fundamentals (PVA) are field-oriented professional courses that profile the student into narrower areas of his / her interests.
Other compulsory (PVB) courses are other professional courses included in the offers of the departments of FEEC BUT. Their goal is to extend students' professional knowledge.
The student chooses to select PV courses in individual semesters so that at the end of his / her bachelor's degree he / she has at least the prescribed minimum of credits in each group of PV courses, while not obtaining the minimum number of credits in one group of PV courses cannot be compensated by exceeding the number of credits obtained in another group of PV courses.
Elective courses extend the general knowledge of students. Courses are chosen by the student himself or herself from a full-faculty offer (FEEC departments) or from the other faculties of VUT (so-called free courses) and can pass them in any year or semester of master study. Elective courses include Physical Education. If a student has not successfully completed an elective course, he / she may or may not write another academic year in the next academic year.
Students must obtain the corresponding electrotechnic qualification at the beginning of their study. Students who begin their study in the year 2020/21 and later, have to fulfil one subject in English for successful study graduation, according to the Guideline BUT To education of foreign languages.
Availability for the disabled
All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.
What degree programme types may have preceded
The graduates may continue in a doctoral study programme.
