Study aims

The aim and content of the prepared study programme Sports Technology, together with the profile of the graduate, are significantly given by the strategic intention of the university to support combined practical bachelor study programs. These will enable the development of the knowledge economy and find jobs in the application sphere, new up-to-date industries, research and social spheres of community life. The aim is to educate a technically focused specialist for work with sports technologies, who is capable of teamwork in up-to-date sports industry aimed at the development, innovation of electronic equipment and systems and creative work in the sports IT. Another goal is to prepare a specialist technician for sports, kinanthropology, physical training medicine, education and research, who will be able to cope with the issues of technical monitoring, analysis and data processing for experts in these fields and will be able to be actively involved in training of experts in physical education and sport.
The aim of the study is to prepare graduates who will be able to use up-to-date sports technologies to process materials for movement analysis, qualified monitoring of sports performance and conditions arising within the training process or testing, which are the basis for experts. The graduate will be equipped with a natural science, social and technical overview in the field of sports and physical education medical technologies. After completion, the graduate will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to work with sports technologies in various spheres of application.

Profile of study programme

The combined bachelor study programme Sports Technology is focused on education in the field of sports, kinanthropology, kinesiology, physical activities and physical education medicine with the use of technical knowledge in the field of electrical engineering.
The study programme is based on education in the courses of kinanthropology and physical education medicine, which will enable the students to understand the laws of human movement and the reaction of the human body to physical activities. Students will get acquainted with human anatomy and physiology, physiology of body workload, biomechanics of sport and other courses that are essential for a comprehensive understanding of the laws of movement in physical activity and sports workload. An integral part of the programme is education in basic technical courses in the field of electrical engineering, which are the basis for understanding the essence and function of devices and information technology used in kinanthropology, sports, physical activities and physical education medicine. The courses of both branches of education will enable the acquisition of the necessary knowledge and skills for professional work with sophisticated contemporary technologies in various spheres of application.
At the same time, the intention is to prepare future students for follow-up master programmes at universities.
The study consists of an appropriate proportion of courses in the two educational branches of Physical Education and Sport; Kinanthropology (52 %) and Electrical Engineering (48 %) so that the knowledge intertwines and forms the basis for the ability to apply it in practice and creative activities in the field of sports technologies. Courses are only compulsory (94 %) and optional (6 %) due to the compulsory completion of courses in two educational branches.
Proportion of all courses within the entire studies:
C: 169 credits (42 courses including Compulsory optional subjects)
O: 11 credits (university-wide offer of courses and offer of courses by FEEC, CESA and free elective courses of BUT)
Within the study (1800 hours), students will complete a compulsory twelve-week professional practical training (480 hours) in selected institutions (manufacturing, service or trade companies, sports facilities, research institutes, sports medicine outpatient clinics, sports organizations and institutions, schools focused on sports and physical education). In addition to compulsory practical training, the study includes other courses where the students will master practical technical skills and experience. In some of them, the emphasis will be placed on self-study. The three-year study will be completed by the defence of a bachelor thesis and a final state examination in selected courses of the compulsory basis.
Compulsory courses will be run by the Centre for Sports Activities, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Physics and Department of Mathematics). Experts from practice (MUDr. Hrazdira, MUDr. Martínková, MUDr. Tomášková) will provide comprehensive or partial teaching in compulsory basic courses. Other experts from practice have been addressed to occasionally give lectures on specific topics within the courses of compulsory basic courses. The list is given in the Personnel Security of the Study programme in the appendix "Personnel Security". Optional courses of technical, economic, managerial and administrative focus will be provided within other bachelor study programmes of FEEC BUT in Brno or CESA courses in the field of kinanthropology and social sciences. Language courses will be run by the FEEC Institute of Languages.


Graduate profile

The graduate will be qualified as a Specialist for Sports Technology and will be equipped with the knowledge needed to work with athletes and sports technologies, or he/she can find a professional career in the development of new technologies and innovations in terms of knowledge of the workload of athletes.
Professional knowledge: The graduate will have basic professional knowledge in the field of Physical Education and Sport; Kinanthropology and Electrical Engineering and will have a comprehensive overview of the interconnection between these two professional fields.

Professional skills: The graduate will be able to do practical jobs with available acquisition systems for kinanthropology, sports, physical education, health, movement activities or physical education in various spheres of application. He/she can be involved in the solution of partial activities, such as the design of measurement protocols, the implementation of complex measurements, calibration and professional servicing of instruments during routine operation or within research activities. The graduate will be able to simultaneously record data during testing from a complex system of multiple devices. He/she will be able to process and statistically prepare data for the analysis in the form of practical outputs from physical activities of the general population to elite sports. He/she will be able to design a project at the level of individual activities, solve its partial parts and manage them.
General competences: The graduate will be able to master a quality management of the material and technical base of sports workplaces, will supervise the observance of professional technical, hygienic and ethical regime when working with sports technologies, will keep professional documentation. He/she will be able to work with professional applications, or information system, to provide information to the public (interested parties) in accordance with their professional competence.

Profession characteristics

The expected employability of graduates in the labour market is in several areas listed below. This assumption is based on the requirements of practice and the experience of a CESA employees from abroad. The market research was conducted in advance (2016), in which the interest of employers in these practically oriented graduates was demonstrated. The research was focused on the involvement of graduates in the field of Sports and Biomedical Technologies. However, the name of the field was changed to SPORTS TECHNOLOGY due to a more precise definition of the focus of the study programme.
Graduates of the study programme SPORTS TECHNOLOGY will find employment in the following areas:
SPORTS INDUSTRY
The graduate can work as a technical specialist for sports technologies in companies that are engaged in the development, innovation and production of sports technologies aimed at monitoring of movement, analysis of movement or body workload during physical activities. He/she will be able to work with systems of sports and physical education informatics. In all these areas, he/she will also be able to perform lower technical, control and managerial functions. Practically oriented university education will enable a direct deployment of graduates in operational-technical, research or service practice.

SERVICES AND PRATICAL FACILITIES
Graduates will be employed in commercial companies where they will occupy the positions of a professional salesman, service provider or perform consulting activities. In modern fitness and reconditioning fitness centres, the graduate will be able to perform fitness monitoring and training of clients using modern equipment during exercises, monitor the current state of the musculoskeletal system and supply the processed data for evaluating the client's condition.

SPORT, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, TEACHING AND RESEARCH
The knowledge and skills of the graduate will be focused on application in practical activities in sports facilities, research institutes, sports organizations and institutions or schools focused on sports and physical education. The technical specialist for Sports Technology may participate in practical training in study programmess focused on education in the field of sports and physical culture, physical education provided by secondary schools, colleges and universities. The graduate will be able to control and perform basic services of sports technologies, organize and coordinate technical services related to the operation of sports and physical education medical equipment. He/she will carry out technical instructions for operators of sports equipment and work safety providers, he/she will take over, inspect and install technical devices at the respective workplace. The graduate will find employment in recreational, performance and elite sports or in services for sports and leisure time facilities. The graduate will work with devices focused on monitoring and analysing the movement, will ensure the measurement of functional states of the human body, the quality of physical activities, fitness, training and performance level, quality of motor abilities and skills. He/she will provide technical support to experts who are involved in leading the training process, developing the fitness, coaching and performance of athletes at all levels. He/she will also support participants in rehabilitative and recreational physical activities, to whom he/she will provide data on their workload or fitness.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS MEDICINE
The graduate will find employment in outpatient clinics and institutes of sports and physical education medicine. He/she will be able to work with sophisticated systems for the examination of current conditions of the organism, will process the results and prepare materials for the analysis before, during and after physical activity. The technical specialist will be able to perform demanding movement monitoring, processing of recorded data and prepare materials for professional analysis and diagnosis for specialists in physical education medicine or physiotherapy. The graduate will be allowed to control and perform basic services of sports technology, organize and coordinate technical services related to the operation of sports and physical education medical equipment. He/she will carry out technical instructions for operators of sports equipment and work safety providers, take over, inspect and install technical devices at the respective the workplace.

FOLLOW-UP STUDY
The study programme provides a good basis for potential follow-up master study programmes (after supplementing the programme with some optional courses offered in the study programme), for example in the study programmes Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics, Biomedical and Ecological Engineering at FEEC BUT, Instruments and Methods for Biomedicine at FBMI CTU in Prague, Biomedical Technician at VŠB TU Ostrava.

Study plan creation

Courses are evaluated in the form of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), where the student's workload ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 hours per academic year and one credit in general corresponds to 25-30 hours of study. BUT ECTS credit allocation: the sum per 1 semester is 30 ECTS credits, i.e., 60 ECTS credits per academic year, one ECTS credit represents 26 hours of total workload.
In the study programme Sports technology, the student's workload in individual years is distributed as follows:
1st year 1560 hours, 26 hours/credit
2nd year 1698 hours, 28 hours/credit – including the actual number of hours of practice
3rd year 1798 hours, 29 hours/credit – including the actual number of hours of practical training
The combined professional study programme takes into account the required volume of professional practice (12 weeks) and at the same time a sufficient theoretical and practical basis from two branches of education. For this reason, it is necessary to slightly compensate for the credit evaluation of practice in relation to professional courses that prepare the students theoretically and practically for their real practice.
In the three-year bachelor study programme, the student must obtain at least 180 credits in the specified credit structure: 165 credits in compulsory courses and at least 15 credits in optional courses. The Compulsory optional subjects groups are not defined due to the requirements for study in two educational branches with a practical focus.
Compulsory courses are usually completed by the student in semesters and years as specified in the study syllabus.
Optional courses enlarge students' general knowledge. The student chooses the courses from the faculty-wide offer (CESA and FEEC institutes) or from the offer of other BUT faculties (so-called free elective courses) and can complete them in any year or semester of the bachelor study. Optional courses include also the course Physical Education. If a student does not successfully complete an enrolled optional course, he/she may but does not have to enrol again in the next academic year.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The study programme provides a good basis for supplementing the education with other courses for potential follow-up master study programmes, for example in the study programmes Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics, Biomedical and Ecological Engineering at FEEC BUT, Instruments and Methods for Biomedicine at FBMI CTU in Prague, Biomedical Technician at VŠB TU Ostrava. In the case of accreditation, both cooperating institutes will try to prepare a follow-up master study programme.
