Publishing through the Gold Open Access means publishing your texts in Open Access journals. Open access to the journal or articles is provided by the publisher. The end user does not bear any financial burden and does not have to pay for the information. However, the publishing process and especially the peer review process is not free.
The financial burden of publishing in OA may be borne by the institutions that publish the journals. The entire publishing process is then paid for by the publisher. This mostly concerns university journals. The author can then publish in the given journal free of charge.
Quite often the financial burden is shifted to the author and it is necessary to pay for the publication of the text in the Open Access journal (e.g. journals published by PLoS, BioMed). However, the fee for publishing a single article can be several thousand dollars!
Therefore, the author can therefore apply for grants, which are announced by individual institutions (e.g. the Mendel University in the Czech Republic https://uvis.mendelu.cz/fondoa, list of funds worldwide) or national agencies (e.g. UK Research and Innovation http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/research/outputs/). Since 2014, authors at the BUT have been able to use the fund to support Open Access publishing.
